The future of Central Europe’s car industry will depend on whether V4 firms retain design, engineering and supplier capabilities as the industry shifts towards electric and software-defined vehicles. Can New Delhi deliver all?
Thousands of kilometres away from Central Europe, India faces a familiar challenge in turning a rapidly expanding manufacturing and engineering base into deeper participation in global production networks. Cooperation between the Visegrad Four (V4) and New Delhi could help both sides, provided it is built around specific industrial tasks rather than diplomatic declarations.
The diplomatic groundwork is already in place. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Poland in August 2024, the first by an Indian prime minister in 45 years, raised relations to a strategic partnership. In June 2025, Modi became the first Indian prime minister to visit Croatia, and in June 2026 he made the first visit by an Indian prime minister to Slovakia since its independence in 1993, where the two sides upgraded ties to a comprehensive partnership. Slovakia’s flagship Indian investment is precisely in the automotive industry – the Tata-owned Jaguar Land Rover plant in Nitra. The inaugural V4+India Foreign Ministers’ Meeting took place on 21 September 2026 in New York, on the sidelines of the 81st UN General Assembly.
