After 45 years, India’s Prime Minister Modi visits Poland, marking a renewed strategic partnership between two nations with rising global influence.
In celebration of the 70th anniversary of establishing bilateral diplomatic relations between India and Poland, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Poland, a significant event after a long wait of 45 years since the last visit of an Indian Prime Minister. Initially planned for September, the visit was rescheduled for August 21st-22nd due to Modi’s decision to visit Kyiv immediately after his trip to Moscow. During the visit, both countries signed a strategic partnership agreement and presented an “action plan” outlining the implementation of the partnership.
Historically, India and Poland shared cordial relations, but for the past three decades, they have neglected each other. India focused primarily on the UK, France, and Western Europe, while France has had a long-standing presence in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific region. Conversely, Poland concentrated on European policy and transatlantic relations, relegating Asia to the back burner. However, after joining NATO and the European Union, Poland shifted its attention towards a global perspective, mainly focusing on China. In 2011, both nations solidified their partnership by signing a strategic agreement in Beijing.
