Whilst Joe Biden’s approach towards Central Europe is likely to be marked first and foremost by continuity, there will be at least two major areas of divergence between the Trump and Biden administrations, notably on the question of values and with regard to European integration.
Central European leaders welcomed the news of Joe Biden’s victory in the US presidential election, held on 3 November, with some ambivalence if not open reluctance.
The Polish and Hungarian governments were openly cheering for Trump in the run-up to the election. Slovenian Prime Minister Janes Janša congratulated Trump for his electoral victory in a tweet published on 5 November when all major networks already predicted that Biden would become the president-elect.
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš did the opposite and acknowledged Joe Biden’s victory while writing from a Twitter account where he is proudly sporting a Trump-style cap.
