Slovakia’s pro-Russian foreign policy turn has reached new levels. Ahead of nationwide pro-democracy protests, Fico is ramping up efforts to silence civil society and intimidate the opposition, as unverified coup allegations close public proceedings and stall a no-confidence vote.
The Slovak government held an emergency security council meeting today following Prime Minister Robert Fico’s controversial allegation that opposition forces were planning a coup against him. Fico offered no publicly available information to support his claim, however, and it was quickly refuted by the opposition and civil society alike.
The circumstances surrounding today’s events were an opposition-led no-confidence vote against the Fico government originally tabled for Tuesday. After the motion of no-confidence had begun, PM Fico asked for the proceeding to be moved off the public record in order to address what he considered to be a related matter of national importance.
