How the EU Can Strengthen Its Collective Defence

The focus needs to be on strengthening the mass production of tried and tested systems

To strengthen EU security, the defence industry needs logistical support for its military capabilities and, most importantly, increased economic backing as the sector has been neglected for decades. Now, it is supposed to save not only Ukraine but the whole of Europe.

EU leaders finally started to realise how dire the state of the EU defence industry is, and they thought if sprayed with funds, the sector could rapidly increase production and help replenish stocks given to Ukraine. The reality is much more complex and requires regulatory changes and industry revamping.

Lacking cohesion

The European defence industry is fragmented from the point of view of manufacturing capacities, sources of raw materials and the national priorities of individual member states.

For some states like France or Poland, the defence industry is primarily state-owned and being prioritised by the government. For the others, like Germany or Czechia, it is mostly privately owned and had been treated as a pariah until 2022.
