Event: Visegrad Insight Breakfast – Europe’s economic security

Closed-door expert discussion at Visegrad Insight premises in Warsaw

30 January 2025

On 29 January 2025, Visegrad Insight hosted embassy representatives, and experts for a discussion about the state of Europe’s economy.

During the Visegrad Insight Breakfast, we discussed Europe’s economic security, particularly in the context of Donald Trump’s return and the ongoing US-China rivalry. The central question was: How can Europe maintain its prosperity?

To remain competitive, the EU must project power and resilience. Europe must determine what factors beyond energy and technology will define its economic security and identify key competitors in this space.

A major challenge is the narrative around economic security. Only 27% of young Europeans (15-24 years) see security as a priority in the next five years. In turn, topics such as the economy or Europe’s competitiveness interest 26% of young respondents.

The EU must navigate between strengthening economic resilience and addressing the growing disinterest of younger generations in these crucial topics.

The global economic landscape is shifting

European businesses have already adjusted to the reality that US policy prioritises the Indo-Pacific over the EU. At the same time, Asia’s growing market influence has eroded European competitiveness, forcing companies to rethink their strategies amid shifting regulations and trade policies.

China’s economic rise poses a direct challenge to Europe. The EU’s regulatory model, designed for internal stability, now competes with global players unconstrained by such rules. This fragmentation weakens Europe’s ability to respond effectively, highlighting the need for structural reforms.

New threats are emerging as economic actors shape political narratives. Figures like Elon Musk use their platforms to influence public debate, blurring the lines between business and governance. This underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of EU regulations across member states to safeguard economic stability and security.
