Just days before leaving office, the Biden administration sanctioned Antal Rogán, a top Orbán ally, marking a rare move against a sitting official from an allied nation – and a direct challenge to Hungary’s political system.
In a rare move, the United States has imposed sanctions on Antal Rogán, a key ally of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, citing systemic corruption. Rogán, who heads the Prime Minister’s Office, has been described as a ‘primary architect, implementer, and beneficiary of systemic corruption’ in Hungary.
This decision, made under the Global Magnitsky Act, is unusual for targeting a sitting minister from an allied country. While this could have far-reaching implications for the oligarchic system underpinning Orbán’s rule, its timing of the decision – just weeks before President Joe Biden leaves office – could take the edge off, as critics argue the move may be perceived as politically driven.
