Trump’s administration is putting Europe on notice: curb ties with China and autocratic regimes to stay under America’s security shield – or, like Orbán’s Hungary, slip into an increasingly costly geostrategic no-man’s-land.
One thing is certain: Europe cannot remain passive in the face of these changes. It must come up with a new vision for itself – especially since the consequences of its chosen direction reach far beyond trade ties with Washington.
Noah Barkin, an expert on European-Chinese relations, noted in the New York Times that a surge of Chinese exports to the European Union is expected. In response, the EU will likely be forced to deploy a range of trade policy tools to stem the influx. That, in turn, could seriously strain EU–China relations.
