On 13 January, Lithuanians stood shoulder to shoulder and became a living barricade, resisting the Soviet empire and changing the course of world events. Events in the United States show that liberal democracy remains fragile and should not be taken for granted.
It took just one generation for 13 January to become our Victory Day in Lithuania. Thirty years ago, the newly restored, young and democratic state endured the assault of the collapsing Soviet empire and hammered perhaps the largest nail into the empire’s coffin.
As such, it comes as no surprise that the world is marking another thirtieth anniversary this year – thirty years since the fall of the Soviet empire.
Last week, the assault on the Capitol in Washington showed that liberal democracy is fragile and should not be taken for granted.
