Poland’s 2025 Presidential Race: Tusk’s Patriotic Gamble
21 April 2025
February’s meetings will test Europe’s ability to balance transatlantic ties with cohesion amid Donald Trump’s return to the White House, cyber threats and intensifying technology and trade competition – while Ursula von der Leyen heads to Poland as it prepares to steer the EU Council presidency.
Ursula von der Leyen is finally coming to Poland. The European Commission President will visit Gdańsk on 6-7 February with the College of Commissioners, after a previously scheduled trip was postponed.
The visit takes place as Poland is set to steer the Council presidency through a busy agenda of security, trade and digital transformation this month. It also serves as a backdrop for the Commission’s broader economic strategy, with von der Leyen set to unveil the Competitiveness Compass, a five-year roadmap for regulatory reforms, industrial investment and strategic autonomy.
