Polish President Unlikely to Block Tusk’s Appointment as PM
1 December 2023
Slovakia is in a similar situation as many NATO members in Europe that have systematically underfunded defence spending. Eyes are now open in Bratislava and the procurement of new armaments is at hand, but whether or not this sentiment will hold after Russia’s aggression subsides is more difficult to predict.
The story of Slovak hard security is slightly bleak: The tanks that Slovakia has are either obsolete or non-functional. The Slovak Armed Forces currently do not have any combat helicopters at all.
Today, Czech and Polish fighter jets – combined with three Patriot missile system batteries provided by NATO allies – help protect the Slovak skies. However, these Patriots do not belong to Slovakia and our soldiers are not even trained to operate them.
