Slovakia again finds itself at a juncture as parliamentary elections draw near on 30 September, and a familiar figure, Robert Fico, is trying to capitalise on the political instability.
Slovakia is faced with a decision between strengthening its fragile democracy or potentially veering towards autocracy driven by xenophobia, alignment with Russia and illiberal leaders feeling that it’s their time to cement their hold on the system for a very long time.
Recent surveys, realised by the Bratislava Policy Institute under the European-funded project RevivEU, indicate distrust in institutions and a lack of cohesion.
