Warsaw could frame the enlargement discussion through the prism of future security architecture and set the tone of accession proceedings for years to come

In just weeks, Poland will assume the EU Council presidency, arriving with strong defence credentials and high ambitions for European security. For Warsaw, it’s more than a routine rotation – this is a rare moment to reframe EU enlargement and align it with Europe’s security priorities. Will Poland rise to the occasion?

In less than seven weeks, the College of Commissioners will arrive in Warsaw to mark the beginning of the Polish presidency of the Council. For freshly minted Commissioners this will be one of their first major international engagements.

For Poland, hosting this meeting offers a rare chance to shape the EU’s agenda at the start of its new term – and position itself as a leader in both security and one of the main champions of enlargement.

It’s the security, stupid!

Following the June 2024 European elections, the EU entered a new institutional cycle – a unique opportunity for Warsaw to push its agenda.
