Poland’s 2025 Presidential Race: Tusk’s Patriotic Gamble
21 April 2025
In a year marked by growing political discontent, Georgescu’s nationalist and isolationist platform has upended Romania’s presidential race. Backed by viral social media campaigns and religious groups, his rhetoric has resonated with disenchanted voters.
‘I am running for Romania, not for Ukraine. Neither my supporters nor the Romanian people are interested in Putin or Ukraine. They are interested in Romania: living well, achieving prosperity, happiness, stability and security. There is excessive focus on an issue that is not our concern. Foreign policy means setting priorities and our priority is neutrality in any conflict. What others do is not our business,’ declared Cǎlin Georgescu during an electoral programme on Digi24, one of Romania’s leading TV news channels.
This sentiment resonates with many Romanians today. At the start of the year, a poll showed that 50% of Romanians believed Ukraine should be ‘pushed’ towards a negotiated peace accord, while only 21% supported helping Ukraine recover territories occupied by Russia. By framing his competitors as warmongers, Georgescu has tapped into a growing sense of disillusionment, striking a chord with the electorate.
