Lithuania positioned itself as an early stalwart of Taiwan’s deepening cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe. Yet, the new government in Vilnius is likely to assume a more lukewarm attitude towards engagements with the island democracy – a development that may shape the posture of other countries in the region towards Taiwan.
In the elections ‘super year’ which saw the emergence of new governments in Taiwan and Lithuania, the island country’s foreign minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) is visiting Vilnius with a delegation of drone industry executives.
They will meet with top government officials with the aim of deepening cooperation on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). While high-level Taiwanese visits remain rare in Europe, Vilnius embraced them under Ingrida Šimonytė’s centre-right government, having hosted Taiwan’s former foreign minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) twice in 2023. Yet, Lin’s visit comes as Lithuania-Taiwan relations face growing challenges amid political upheaval in Vilnius.
