In Bulgaria, former prime minister Boyko Borisov is following a familiar regional pattern – stepping back from official leadership while holding power behind the scenes.
Since 16 January, Bulgaria has been governed by a fragile coalition of Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (Граждани за европейско развитие на България, GERB), the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) and the junior partner There is Such a Nation (TSN). Lacking a parliamentary majority, they still secured a confidence vote with backing from MPs of Ahmed Dogan’s Democracy, Rights and Freedoms (DPS-AD).
