Slovakia’s cultural sector faces a nationalist overhaul under Minister Martina Šimkovičová, as Prime Minister Robert Fico leverages this shift to solidify kleptocratic power.
Slovakia’s far-right Minister of Culture Martina Šimkovičová has engulfed the country’s cultural scene in turmoil and driven thousands of anti-government protesters into the streets of the country’s capital Bratislava after her latest round of firings in the cultural institutions.
The stark nationalist proclamations Šimkovičová, her loyalists and backers from the far right SNS party made this month are largely in line with the hardened rhetoric of the populist Prime Minister Robert Fico since his conservative leftist Smer party made a comeback to power after forming a coalition with SNS and centre-left Hlas last autumn.
What is novel, however, is how Fico’s left-right cabinet learnt to instrumentalise the radical ideology to pursue its kleptocratic goals including safeguarding its officials and business allies from criminal investigations and cementing its grip on power for years to come.
