On 12 December 2024, Visegrad Insight hosted ambassadors, embassy representatives, and experts for a discussion on the upcoming Polish Presidency of the EU Council.
Poland’s presidency of the EU Council comes at a pivotal moment, offering Warsaw the chance to shape discussions with the new European Commission. This opportunity is particularly significant given the current dynamics in Paris and Berlin, as Warsaw can offer a moment of European stability.
Poland’s legitimacy is bolstered by its substantial increase in defence spending and its longstanding warnings about the threat from Russia. The Polish presidency also overlaps with the country’s upcoming presidential elections, adding a political dimension. Any missteps in handling EU relations could be leveraged by the opposition.
Further complicating matters, Donald Trump’s election as US president presents new challenges, including uncertainties surrounding NATO’s future and the potential for rising trade tariffs.
