Europe’s democrats must listen to Donald Trump’s words and get serious about their collective defence. Military purchases alone will not save democracies but military service might, if done right.
This October saw renewed appeals for peace or ceasefire in two of the world’s most destabilising conflicts: the Russian-Ukrainian war and the crisis in the Middle East.
While US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged Israel and Hamas to engage in ceasefire talks, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed a desire to discuss a ‘just peace’ with Vladimir Putin, and Hungary’s Viktor Orbán advocated for replacing NATO’s current strategy with ‘ceasefire and peace talks.’ Even former US President Donald Trump suggested that the death of a top Hamas leader would facilitate peace, and he would promote it.
