The European Union’s vaccination strategy proved to be a debacle. Nevertheless, the European bloc still has a chance to live up to its role as a civilian power.
Do not get me wrong; the EU’s decision to act together on vaccine procurement was absolutely right. The ability to resist the temptation of ‘vaccine nationalism’ was a powerful display of European solidarity.
However, choosing this common approach does not absolve EU leaders of all their failings.
The failure to act quickly and decisively has not only caused delayed access to vaccines for its own citizens, but it has also prevented the EU from spearheading the global effort to tackle COVID-19.
