Czech Television Will End If ANO Rules

An Interview with former Czech Minister of Justice Jiří Pospíšil

1 October 2021

The European Union wants to protect free media, which are in danger not only in Poland and Hungary but also in the Czech Republic. According to MEP Jiří Pospíšil, free media is a key pillar of democracy.

In the build-up to October’s election in Czechia, Luboš Palata interviews former Minister of Justice Jiří Pospíšil on the impact populist leaders in Central Europe are having on media freedoms as well as the EU’s strategy to hopefully thwart those efforts.

You were present at a recent speech by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, on the state of the European Union. How do you rate the part that was about media freedom? Can the EU keep media free throughout the Union?

Jiří Pospíšil (1974) – former Minister of Justice (2006-2012), former chairman of TOP 09, MEP since 2014. Chairman of the Board of the Kampa Museum in Prague – the most important private museum of modern art in Central Europe.

I was very pleased that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, also addressed the independence of the media in her report on the state of the European Union. She spoke about her in the part of her speech that focused on European values.
