- World Economic Forum in Davos. Many top political elites will miss this year’s gathering, but there will still be 52 heads of state in attendance, along with a long list of VIPs. The charity Oxfam International is using the opportunity to call for a windfall tax to help cut global inequality.
- The Eurogroup meeting today, 16 January. It marks the occasion of Croatia joining the Eurozone, and the digital Europe project will also be discussed.
- The Economic and Financial Affairs Council is held on 17 January. The Swedish presidency will present its work programme, and ministers will exchange views on the economic and financial impact of Russia’s war against Ukraine.
- The European Parliament Plenary sessions on January 16-19 will cover topics including establishing a tribunal on the crime of war aggression against Ukraine, reform of EU procedures and control measures for waste shipments, or Uber’s lobbying practices in the EU.
- Over 80,000 Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv to protest against the judicial reforms of the new hard-right government of Benjamin Netanyahu. The old new Israeli prime minister was on friendly terms with several central European strongmen, including Hungarian Viktor Orbán, Czech Miloš Zeman and Slovenian Janez Janša.
