Czech history in the last century has taught them to prefer to avoid major historical events. Because then they are more likely to pay for them as a nation.
Sometimes, it is necessary to lend a helping hand to history and to push events forward through one’s own efforts, even if the ordinary citizen does not notice it and the voter does not appreciate it. Politicians usually do not think in such a historical dimension. Their horizon of action is limited by their four-year mandate and their (in)ability to see themselves and their country in a broader context.

At the same time, the Czechs are very successful in ignoring those historical moments that seemingly do not directly concern them. One could say that lately, roughly twenty years after joining NATO and the EU, the Czechs have been rather dull about history.
