The Constitutional Court in Slovakia has acted quickly to stop many of the far-reaching legislative changes proposed by PM Fico, but he and his party affiliates are still poised to pursue a power grab.
Slovak populist Prime Minister Robert Fico’s leap forward to achieving impunity encounters its first major blow as a Constitutional Court ruling suspends a large part of his judicial overhaul.
In an attempt to secure more control over Slovakia, Fico pushed through a legislative package that would have been the most dramatic change in the country’s judiciary and criminal code since the fall of communism in then Czechoslovakia in 1989.
