In Bulgaria the Status Quo Strikes Back

The old 'Deep State' has broken the coalition along its weakest link

After seven months in power, Kiril Petkov’s quadruple coalition government lost a vote of no confidence in the Bulgarian parliament.

Petkov lost the majority in the parliament after the party of the Bulgarian showman Slavi Trifonov left the ruling coalition, allegedly as a consequence of the Prime Minister’s efforts to secure the removal of the Bulgarian veto for the beginning of accession negotiations between the EU and North Macedonia. Trifonov accused Petkov of conducting a parallel foreign policy through his channels, disregarding the Minister of Foreign Affairs Teodora Genchovska, a member of Trifonov’s party ‘There is Such a Nation’ (TSN).

Editor’s Pick: A Bad Omen for the CEE’s ‘Political Turn’

Whereas this sounds like a convenient excuse, Trifonov consciously became the enfant terrible of the Bulgarian political scene during the anti-Borisov protests. Slavi builds his image as a spicy commentator of the political reality and is a well-known celebrity. His simplistic nationalist undertones disseminated through his programs attracted many to the extent that after the July 2021 elections, he won the popular vote and had the chance to form a government. However, his irrational and absurd decisions raised legitimate questions about his role in Bulgarian politics.
