Poland’s 2025 Presidential Race: Tusk’s Patriotic Gamble
21 April 2025

Austrian democracy is going over the edge. It shows what the real problem is with European politics.
For the first time, Austria’s far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) may lead the government, with the possibility of a Freedom Party chancellor. While the FPÖ has previously been in coalitions, it always played a junior role. Now, the dominant People’s Party (ÖVP) could find itself as the minor partner, breaking an informal red line observed across EU member states: radicals with ties to Nazism, xenophobia, or Kremlin support should not be legitimised through government alliances, even with electoral backing.
This development will be closely monitored in neighbouring Germany, where a similar situation could arise after February’s elections. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) is projected to secure 20% of the vote. Forming a coalition without the AfD may prove difficult, yet German Democrats remain adamant about maintaining the red line.
