Are CEE Leaders Confident of US Support of Ukraine Now that Biden Has Dropped Out?

Democratic Security Outlook 2024: 22-28 July

22 July 2024

During a week when Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected as the European Commission President, Joe Biden pulled out of the US Presidential race and endorsed Kamala Harris for the Democrat ticket. The question now is whether the US Vice President will officially be nominated to run against Donald Trump, and therefore join Ursula von der Leyen in leading the defence of the West’s democratic principles.

On 22 July, EU foreign ministers will meet to decide whether to boycott Hungary’s foreign affairs summit in Budapest on 28-29 August, in response to Viktor Orbán’s controversial meetings with Donald Trump, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin.

Upcoming on Visegrad Insight:

  • Eva Mihočková breaks down how Slovakia’s Smer is aiming for independent media and NGO control after they took over the public broadcaster.
  • Kamil Kołsut looks into the impact of Russians living alongside Ukrainians in the Paris Olympic Village, as the Olympic movement aims not to punish athletes for their governments’ actions.
  • Wojciech Przybylski interviews Jason Steinhauer, bestselling author of History Disrupted, about how autocrats make use of digital disruption in history research.
