Accidental Exits from the EU

Hungary and Poland Inching toward the Cliff Edge

4 November 2021

The EU protects its integrity by withholding Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) funds but is it prepared for the unintended exits of Hungary or Poland when the spiral of conflicting narratives slips out of control?

Last May, I took part in a debate on hvg.hu, a Hungarian online news site.

In that debate, my opponent argued that the stalemate between the European Union and the Fidesz-led Hungarian government could be resolved by the former accepting that member-states should be allowed to have their own interpretation of the basic values of the community, including the rule of law.

My counterargument was that the EU, whose entire raison d’etre, is based on the common understanding and sharing of these values, was simply not able to function this way.
