Sandu Defies Russia: Moldova Sets the Tone for Election Week

Tariffs on electric vehicles (EVs), to be decided this week, will shape the future of Central Europe’s automotive industry and the region’s relations with China.
Economies with strong automotive ties to China, such as Hungary, Slovakia, Germany and Sweden, have indicated they will vote against the tariffs in an EU vote on 25 September. In contrast, Poland and France are leading support in favour.
From Paris, voices suggest that this moment could be pivotal for the economic security of the European project. This perspective highlights a dividing line across the Central and Eastern European (CEE) region.
