Russian propaganda can only be countered by engaging civil society and the wider public in a real conversation about the country’s future. Yet in Romania, such a discussion has been absent for the past 35 years – leaving citizens without a shared vision or the means to realise it.

‘New evidence has come to light about recent tensions in Russian propaganda. […] Russia’s elite travel throughout Europe, ostensibly as tourists, but in fact they spread propaganda and recruit sympathisers. Russian agents have been the cause of unrest in France, stirring up anxiety in the local press. […] If a temporary rift were to appear between France and England, the 75 Russian agents and Phanariots in Thessaly, Albania, Montenegro, Serbia, etc. would react immediately.’

No, this is not a text from today’s newspaper. It’s a report from the Gazeta de Transilvania in 1856, quoted from an article in the Morning Post dedicated to the methods used by Russia to spread propaganda throughout Europe.
