But how much do debates matter in US elections?
Not much, at least according to Allan Lichtman, the oft-cited historian who has correctly predicted all but one US presidential election since 1984. For evidence, look no further than the fact that none of the candidates widely considered to have won their debates – Clinton in 2016, John McCain in 2008 and Al Gore in 2000 – went on to win their elections.
