Poland’s 2025 Presidential Race: Tusk’s Patriotic Gamble

What’s the first thing the likely new German Foreign Minister does? Fly to Poland for the Legia Warszawa – Chelsea game, of course!
The meeting of Johann Wadephul and Radosław Sikorski already signals closer cooperation between Warsaw and the new government in Berlin. Poland will have more influence on German positions, like getting it to pay more for defence, and be stricter on Hungary.
It will be interesting to see how closer relations play out domestically, however, as anti-German sentiment re-emerges in the Polish election campaign.
Case in point, Poles are celebrating 1,000 years since the coronation of the first Polish king, Bolesław Chrobry – a moment Law and Justice is using to condemn so-called threats to national sovereignty.
