EU Focus on Security in Gdansk. Rutte Urges War Readiness
3 February 2025
December will see the Summit for Democracy rebuild alliances across the Western world and the globe, with Hungary being a notable exception. The conflict in Ukraine is set to escalate with the intimidation of 100,000 Russian troops along the border and destabilising domestic scandals while media takeovers continue throughout the region threatening the integrity of the market itself.
Joe Biden’s long-awaited Summit for Democracy will be a major focus of December for several reasons.
After the rise of non-democratic ‘illiberalism’ in Central European capitals like Budapest, Ljubljana, Warsaw and, until recently Prague, many of the specific tenets of these failed-democratic policies were exported to the US, mainly by ideologues like Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller.
As the Western world’s and people’s faith in democracy desperately need to be restored, this Summit could be the beginning of that return.
