Romania’s Presidential Election: European Alliances vs Authoritarian Drift

A transatlantic alliance of far-right think tanks is promoting an illiberal reset of the European Union. With roots in the US Project 2025 and growing links to European actors, this effort aims to weaken EU institutions, roll back rule-of-law mechanisms and challenge the Union’s democratic foundations.
The media in Central Europe have been uncovering transatlantic plans to remake the EU.
The architects of Project 2025 – the radical blueprint for Donald Trump’s second presidency – are increasingly turning their focus to Europe. On 11 March, the Heritage Foundation convened a closed-door meeting in Washington D.C. with conservative lobbyists and far-right think tanks, including the Orbán government’s Mathias Corvinus Collegium (MCC) and Poland’s Ordo Iuris, to discuss proposals for dismantling the European Union.
