The Centre-Right Antidote For EU Populism

Democratic Security Outlook: 18-24 October

18 October 2021

Every Monday Visegrad Insight releases a weekly update on key developments in Central Europe from the point of view of democratic security.

Our team monitors for important political, civil society, economy and foreign policy updates and where possible hints at risks and developing scenarios. Currently, we monitor the situation in the following 13 countries

This week the European Parliament will hold a Plenary Session on debate topics relating to the rule of law crisis in Poland (and primacy of EU law), as well as the pushbacks of migrants at the EU’s external border. Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki will tag along to Strasbourg on Tuesday to present Poland’s position on Warsaw’s dispute with Brussels.

Coal miners and energy workers in Bulgaria are demanding job security assurances from the government amid EU targets to reduce carbon emissions and shut down coal plants, while the European gas supply crunch is causing concern over a huge spike in heating bills this winter.
