Ursula von der Leyen has promised a new political structure for candidate states. Yet, we still need to find out what this future accession framework would entail.
The EU enlargement has the potential to reinvigorate the European project. Swift accession will make it better prepared to confront the emerging multipolar world, but old and new obstacles still challenge the forward momentum of this process.
A political integration framework is needed to facilitate growing cooperation between the member and candidate states. While well-intentioned, it has the potential to do more harm than good if the implementation goes awry. Remember, some candidates have been perpetually frozen on the doorstep of Europe.
