Suspense and Suspension

V/I Weekly News Roundup

6 February 2020

In upholding the suspension of Fidesz instead of taking additional measures, the European People’s Party opted for a state of suspense. Meanwhile, new developments concerning the possible conflicts of interest of Czech Prime Minister Babiš show no sign of abating.

The Agrofert saga

In a surprise move, the Czech Government decided to sue the European Commission for its decision to withhold subsidies to Agrofert. In late 2019, the company came under scrutiny for the possible conflict of interest Prime Minister Andrej Babiš, who according to Commission audits still exerts control over its activities.

The matter of EU subsidies for Agrofert is not the only case haunting the Czech Prime Minister. In a related case, concerning the alleged use of illegal subsidies for a farm. So far, Babiš has managed to keep the ranks of his government closed, despite street protests and pressure from the opposition.
