Europe’s far-right movements love to position themselves as defenders of national sovereignty. Yet time and again, they prove willing to trade independence for alliances with foreign powers – from Russian banks to American billionaires. Their rhetoric is nationalist, but their loyalties tell a different story.
The far right across Europe loves to talk about protecting national sovereignty. They rail against Brussels, Washington and international institutions, claiming they are defending their nations from foreign meddling. But when outside influence works in their favour, these same voices go quiet – or even cheer.
This double standard was on full display at the 2025 Munich Security Conference.
