Why the EU Must Include Roma in Its Democracy Strategy – COMMENTARY

Donald Trump’s aggressive tariffs and unfiltered jibes have shaken Europe awake, revealing its dependence on cheap energy, trade, and US protection. As Russia threatens Ukraine and China pursues global dominance, the EU must grasp this chance to craft a security-first economic strategy—or risk being a pawn in a brutal power game.
As the globalist mindset fades, mourned by many, Europe should embrace the current global turbulence as an opportunity to upgrade its position ensuring its strategy is a good balance of values and power. And since the EU values are closely linked to our trade interests, we should make better use of the security upgrade to rethink also the block’s approach to economic security.
Trade and economic partnership will only be restored if the balance of power is recalibrated, underpinned by a collective resolve to arm ourselves and shoulder the costs of our own security. This is why the US has no problem with talking to Russia, while Europe is not at the table and frightened to be on the menu.
A tweet by Dmitry Medvedev tells it all: ‘there is only Russia and America in the dining room. On the menu: light appetisers – Brussels sprouts, British fish and chips and Paris rooster. The main course is a Kiev-style cutlet.’
