Slovakia Is Divided as Never Before

Robert Fico and Russian disinformation are polarising the country on every issue

18 March 2022

While Russia is invading a sovereign country, Ukraine, they had already won a hybrid war in Slovakia.

It’s Tuesday, 9th of February and the parliament session begins, with the Defence Treaty (DCA) between Slovakia and the United States of America set to be approved, among other things. This agreement, however, did not only settle the reconstruction of airports, but also the destiny of our country. Rather, the question was whether we will still belong to the West, for which we fought for decades, or if we will drift towards an authoritarian East headed by Vladimir Putin. After several years, the defence pact, which Robert Fico and Peter Pellegrini (Smer-SD) began negotiating in 2018, took a legislative form.

Slovakia has been a member of NATO for 17 years and works closely with the US to ensure national security. For example, in 2018, the government paid more than two billion euros for American F-16 fighter jets. This was one of the primary reasons why the DCA was negotiated at all.
