Europe Ramps Up Defence Posture While US Administration Calls Out Militant Democracy

In a series of high-level discussions across Bratislava, Budapest and Prague, policymakers and civil society leaders explored how Central Europe can better combat disinformation and safeguard democracy.
The world is increasingly recognising the scale of democratic interference, prompting countries and international bodies to develop strategies to combat it.
In a historic decision, Romania’s Constitutional Court annulled the first round of its presidential election following allegations of Russian interference. Declassified intelligence, released by President Klaus Iohannis, alleged a coordinated Russian campaign boosting far-right outsider Călin Georgescu on platforms like TikTok and Telegram. Despite declaring no campaign spending, Georgescu emerged as the frontrunner in the 24 November vote and was poised to face pro-EU candidate Elena Lasconi of the Save Romania Union party in a runoff.
