EU Should Enlarge, Even Out of Despair – COMMENTARY
3 October 2024

The unofficial unveiling of the EU Strategic Agenda 2024-2029 signalled a significant shift towards prioritising security and democratic freedoms while navigating challenges such as division within the European Parliament and evolving public opinion.
Last week, the European public opinion learned about the upcoming EU Strategic Agenda 2024–2029. The leaked document suggests a vast improvement in substance and focus from last year’s Granada Declaration. In short, security is first, democratic freedoms are back, and the enlargement is for real.
However, the public focus was slightly misplaced by Politico. The outlet was alarmed about ditching the green topic. The Green agenda is already profoundly integrated with all horizontal policies. There should be no lament about putting everything in the basket. Strategies that work are not dream wishlists. Security, prosperity, and freedom must be the priorities of the EU agenda. And in that light, climate change response will also find its way.
So, how does Europe want to be great again and not become Trumpist in the process?
