EU Should Enlarge, Even Out of Despair – COMMENTARY
3 October 2024
Central Europe’s recent success in the political, security and diplomatic arenas should be lauded as long as the praise doesn’t turn into a hubris that threatens the greater Western and European strategic framework.
Russia’s war against Ukraine has brought a new dynamic to Central Europe, shaking the region’s existing self-understanding and its relationship to the EU´s decision-making centre in Western Europe.
The leaders of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have taken a decisive lead in helping Ukraine, which has outperformed Western European member states in speed and vigour. Hungary, on the other hand, has been completely isolated by its disapproving position. The formerly passive and invisible Czech Republic now enjoys the respect of its European partners, which is further strengthened by its well-managed Presidency of the Council of the EU.
