President Dan ended a political deadlock by nominating Siegfried Mureșan as prime minister-designate. Mureșan is a Member of the European Parliament for the National Liberal Party (PNL).
Watch out for challenges and comebacks from Călin Georgescu. He is the controversial presidential candidate whose massive social media campaign led to the election being canceled and postponed over Russian interference.
The president’s nomination was his final make-or-break move before departing for a high-stakes UN General Assembly gathering in New York along with numerous other CEE politicians.
Mureșan’s candidacy was announced on 17 September, and Dan said the nomination came from a long consultation with the party leaders. Supported by the PNL, the Save Romania Union and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania, Mureșan has the backing of 169 MPs. To form a government, however, he needs a supermajority of 233 votes, and has to present his cabinet list and programme by 27 September. This could well become Dan’s third and final attempt to form a government before resorting to early elections.
