The historical rivalries in Russia between Communist Party activists, the military and the secret police have been largely under Putin’s control over the past two decades. However, the Wagner mutiny showcases the immense cracks that are forming in his command structure, and how these powers will emerge is far from certain.
Yevgeny Prigozhin’s recent speech and march shocked both Russia and the West. For Putin, it put an unwelcome spotlight on the state he created and currently “controls” as well as its lack of efficiencies.
Moreover, the Wagner mutiny has exposed the shadowy dealings between Russia’s chain of command as well as the emerging competition between groups vying for control. The question remains if these conflicts will lead to the collapse of the state itself.
