After eight years in power, the Polish far-right opposition is facing lean years; the consequences of Jaroslaw Kaczyński’s policies.
‘I see here the voice of a young political sage,’ this is how Jarosław Kaczyński – former deputy prime minister and chairman of the Polish far-right opposition party Law and Justice (PiS) – dismissed one journalist at a press conference who asked him whether PiS should not have savings in their accounts for the proverbial darkest hour.
Such questions were also raised outside of the PiS chairman’s conferences. Marcin Mastalerek, who has been openly critical of Kaczyński’s leadership and advocating for his retirement, publicly estimated that PiS should have saved around PLN 100 million (~EUR 25 million) during its eight years in power. Mastalerek, once the party’s spin doctor and now head of President Andrzej Duda’s cabinet, noted that this amount, in light of the scandals exposed by the prosecution, is almost laughable.
