National Assembly Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer assumed the interim powers of the President of the Republic of Hungary from midnight on Monday. The Assembly now has 30 days to name a successor.
The vacancy is another test of the ‘humane nationalism’ – a term coined by political scientist Zsolt Enyedi – that carried Péter Magyar into the office. The PM will ask chess grandmaster Judit Polgár to take the post. In this case, Hungary could have yet another female president, two years after the forced resignation of the last handed Magyar his Zwischenzug in national politics.
