US Boosts Troops in Poland, Kyiv Pushes for Accession
25 May 2026
Poland is incensed by President Zelenskyy’s decision last week to name one of its elite special forces units – credited with helping defend Kyiv in 2022 – after the ‘Heroes of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army’ (UPA). Largely seen in Ukraine as a symbol of national resistance against Soviet and Nazi occupation, in Poland it is primarily associated with the massacres of Polish civilians during the Second World War.
President Karol Nawrocki has responded to nationalist calls by announcing he will consider revoking the Order of the White Eagle – Poland’s highest state honour – awarded to Zelenskyy in 2023, with a decision expected on 8 June. While the Polish government has formally denounced Zelenskyy’s move, it is urging diplomatic de-escalation and institutional dialogue to address this painful chapter of shared history.
Spoiler alert – President Nawrocki rarely misses an opportunity to undermine the Donald Tusk government, even when it risks harming Poland’s core national interests.
