Slovak Prime Minister Pays the Ultimate Price for Loyalty

At home, Heger will remain a weak leader who allowed fascists into power

30 August 2022

With the deadline for the Slovak coalition coming at the end of August, PM’s blind loyalty to his party leader brought the government to the brink.

On the last day of August, the ultimatum for the departure of Finance Minister Igor Matovič from his post will expire. This ultimatum is the only condition given by the Liberals from the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) Party to return to the coalition. Their support is necessary for Prime Minister Eduard Heger to keep his government’s majority. They left it at the beginning of July, giving the remaining members two long months to deal with their demand.

For the Prime Minister, this crisis was a chance to show that he was not just a substitute for Igor Matovič, the leader of the Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (Obyčajní lidí a nezávislé osobnosti, OĽaNO) movement — who under pressure from coalition partners had to give up the premiership. There was also a hope that he would turn the credit he had gained from his principled stance on Ukraine into legitimacy on domestic soil.
