The rise of far-right parties among young voters across Europe, from Germany to Poland and France, has shocked many observers. What was once seen as a generational affinity for green and progressive movements has transformed into a right-wing shift, fuelled by economic concerns, migration issues and a growing frustration with traditional political parties.
In May of this year, a cell phone video from the upper-class island refuge of Sylt went viral. To the sound of the Eurodance classic ‘L’amour Toujours’, young partygoers chanted the xenophobic slogan ‘Deutschland den Deutschen, Ausländer raus‘ (Germany to the Germans, foreigners out).
The outrage was swift – federal ministers denounced the chants as racist, and Chancellor Olaf Scholz called the slogans ‘disgusting’ and ‘unacceptable’. Yet the video sparked more than just outrage – it ignited a conversation about the political undercurrents among Europe’s youth.
